Users' Reviews of the JLT Dictionaries

Peter is a superhero!: I've had a JLT Axim for over a year now (you can read my initial review), but I had to come back and write some more praise for Peter.

Not only is the JLT Axim unbelievably useful, but despite the fact that I bought my Axim from Peter over a year ago (and he had no obligation to help me) completely saved my a** from my own stupidity! I managed to turn my Axim into a 50,000yen paperweight by trying to update Windows (NOT RECOMMENDED... unless you have money to burn), but Peter managed to get me back up and running THE SAME DAY.

Buy the JLT PDA!! You *WILL NOT* regret it!!!!

I purchased the Axim (English OS) and I've had it for about three weeks now. I faced a few bumps in the road, which was ultimately caused by another software program that I installed. However, Peter was very helpful and promptly replied to my emails and helped resolved the IT problem. At first I was skeptical about purchasing something that was coming from across the globe (I'm based in US). However, Peter was very reliable and very professional. It takes awhile to get use to the keyboard when looking up Japanese/English words as I used to be an owner of a denshi, but I've gotten used to it. I think a dictionary PDA is definitely the way to go. Aside from the included programs, I've also been able to use it for watching Japanese news clips. It's a great tool and I highly recommend it!

The JLT: a must-have: I have received the Japanese OS Pack about two weeks ago now, and so far I must say it's worth the money it costs.

At first, even though I was unsure about which version of the OS to purchase it appeared that it is pretty simple and I got used to it quickly. The overall device is very elegant and pleasant to use (although I'm not a big fan of the touch-pad style of the buttons below the screen as I keep touching them accidentally while in Landscape orientation).

The dictionaries are just perfect. In fact I realized that the Eijiro/Waeijiro was the one I use on Internet everyday (http://www.alc.co.jp/index.html) for my translation work. And if you can't find what you want in this one, there are a few other ones to try and search. Highlighting the text can be a little bit tricky at first as you have to do it with the stylus pretty quickly or the "right click" menu may pop up instead. The main functionalities are easy and quick to figure out, the input Kanji recognition is really efficient and overall the switch on-to-find word process is pretty fast.

Peter is very professional and answered all my questions the same day I was asking them. The delivery was very quick and the package would have needed to be run over by a truck to be damaged. The documentation on the provided CD is clear and if you lose the CD, you can still find it on the SD card in the device or on Internet.

Be sure to purchase a case. As already said by Peter himself, it is pretty thin and ensures that the device does not take any damage due to being carried in a bag with other things pressing on and hitting it continuously.

To sum up, a very good purchase, all of it worth the price!

6 months with the JLT: i have had the aximX51v version since mid 08. i use this PDA for the dictionary function only, and agree with peter that a second battery is not necessary. have had no problems at all, installed the CONJUGATions dict. when it became available with ease. i use the JLT daily and recommend it highly.

On the road with JLT: Just got back from a road trip around Japan. Having the Axim with GPS and the dictionary to instantly look up a Kanji character helped make the trip even more memorable. I spent a long time searching for a product like this, and this met all of my requirements. I would thoroughly recommend this system for anyone wanting a fast way of improving your Japanese. Peter also offers fast and professional service.

Great Product!: I am really excited!

I have been using my Dell Axim since about April of this year and I have had great success with it. My wife has a Japanese Electronic dictionary that she uses and she is favorably impressed with my Dell. She is always asking me to look up words for her.

I showed it to one of my Japanese friends and he was amazed that a Gaijin like me could find such a useful product.

I bought one of the discounted units that had a slight “Defect” on the screen. I can’t even see the defect. I have to actually get very close to the screen before I can tell where it is!

I am totally satisfied with this purchase.

Thanks for a great product!

Amazing product: What an amazing product! I've had the Japanese OS version on an iPAQ for a month plus, and the dictionary functions are great. The kanji recognition really works well.

Peter's been a great resource, and he's obviously put a huge amount of effort (and himself) into this. Thanks!

There is a learning curve with the Japanese OS, but for the dictionary, it's pretty easy. For a lower intermediate student (JLPT level 4 or a bit better) like me, there's bit to do, but I figure it's just another learning experience.

The Japanese OS is a bit less transparent for using Pocket Outlook and (especially) for adding American games. (Shortcuts for the latter don't always get installed). So if you want to make full use of the iPAQ as a PDA, you should get an English language File Explorer. Resco is the high end, but GSFinder is free, and works fine for me.

I'll second Peter's endorsement of King Kanji, but I also really like Pocket Stackz for flashcards (great selection and more customizable, but without stroke order animation). Other SW I like: City Time, Pocket 10B SE (calculator), Magic Button, eWallet.

Get the InnoPocket Magnum Case; it's really convenient. I got mine from cases.com. SFPlanet.com is another good source for accessories.

PDA jisho is everything I need and more!: I am love, love, loving my PDA jisho! I have used it so many times and so easily since I got it. My biggest success with it so far was a few days after receiving the Axim when I missed a package delivery and received a failure to deliver notice. Instead of giving it to my husband to take to work for the translator to look at the next day, I was able to use kanjidic to decipher that the package would be held for me to pick up at a post office. That same day I then headed up to my local post office tapping away at Eijiro/Waeijiro to cross search for phrases which allowed me to sail confidently inside and ask for directions to the larger post office where my package was - as though I didn't need a jisho at all!

There was virtually no learning curve and I am also making full use of the PDA functions it is my diary, my alarm clock - everything!

Thank you!

JLT for aussie buyers: i've just received the JLT pda from the above poster, and while initially i was hesitant about buying this DICT from japan and having it sent to australia, the whole transaction was very smooth. peter offers a secure way of paying, and answers all questions promptly, and the item can be tracked by EMS while in transit..

as for the JLT itself, to review the product online before purchase is easier than any others as the website is comprehensive...

i also have been using an casioEXWORD, and while it is a great dict at first i did need the help of a native japanese speaker before it was of any use for my study. the JLT however, is very easy to navigate.

the kanji recognition (as has been mentioned before about the JLT) is fantastic after using the EXWORD.....even a sloppy kanji inputted into the JLT will find the correct one most of the time...in the EXWORD the kanji input is more difficult, and a lot of the time i gave up trying and looked online...

and of course, find the correct kanji and jump to kanjidict for stroke orders...

perfect for my needs

Love the JLT: If you need a pocket dictionary, this is the one to get. Everyone has said it here, the search results are fast and on the money. The ordering process is simple and shipping was fast. Peter is extremely helpful when you need it. I ordered the Japanese OS and I don't regret it for a minute. After some time you just instinctively know what each menu item does, even if you haven't learned the meaning of that particular word. Then there's the bonus fact that it's a PDA. You can put all the other programs and info on there that you want, unlike normal pocket dictionaries that only have that one function. Keep up the good work Peter, and thanks again.
